Surviving the Second Wave of COVID-19

The second wave of the Coronavirus has engulfed India and many are struggling to find the basic necessities to survive. With the support of Catholic World Mission, donors like you, and the CDSSS-Jeevana we can combat the virus and aid the people who have been suffering in Calicut and Kerala
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything about our world. From how we go to work or school, take a trip to the grocery store, or even how close we interact with our loved ones. While this worldwide tragedy has affected every country there are some places where the virus has severely impacted its society. India has been facing some of the worst cases and issues in the world due to the Coronavirus. The second wave has engulfed them and many are struggling to find the basic necessities to survive. Calicut, Malappuram and the Wayanad districts of Kerala State in the country are no different, and are hanging by a thread during this devastating time.

“The immediate need of the hour is to enable poor people to have food kits and to ensure that they have the minimum necessities of life met. People of various categories do need food and other non-food items such as sanitizers and hygiene maintaining agents.”-Reverend Dr. Varghese Chakkalakal

The Most Rev. Dr. Varghese Chakkalakal, Bishop of Calicut Diocese & Chairman of CDSSS-JEEVANA (Calicut Diocese Social Service Society) has experienced first-hand the sorrows and struggles of the people living in these places. He documents that people were already affected by the horrible impact of the first wave of COVID 19, and now it is even worse as many have no jobs, steady income, or food. Kerala has 1,701,979 confirmed cases and 356,872 active cases. So far 5,507 deaths have been reported as of May 5, 2021. It is reported that Calicut alone has more than 207,624 cases of infection

“At the same time we do have a sense of hope at this critical time that your esteemed office would come to our assistance to alleviate the suffering of poor people as it has done in the past.” – Reverend Dr. Varghese Chakkalakal

While the tragedy that has occurred in these places is bleak and heartbreaking the Reverend has hope for a better future. With the support of Catholic World Mission, donors like you, and the CDSSS-Jeevana we are ready to combat the virus and aid the people who have been suffering in Calicut and Kerala.

The Calicut Diocese Social Service Society has been providing for the helpless by supplying them with basic needs and necessities for almost one hundred years. The projects implemented within the past 98 years have focused on empowering people who desperately need a living and stable income. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic and a semi-lockdown that has been put into effect it is now a difficult situation as people cannot work to earn their livelihood. Even with this challenge this is not stopping them from assisting the people who are in dire need.

Both Catholic World Mission and CDSSS-Jeevana are planning to support people that are deprived of food and other essential commodities during this life-threatening time in India. The best solution for this crisis is to supply people with essential needs as they safely remain home.  The CDSSS-Jeevana is in a unique position as they are able to rush to people’s aid during this devastating time as civil authorities have granted special passes to them.

We cannot throw away our shot at helping India heal, and it is time to partner with CDSSS-Jeevana to save the lives of many hurting people.

How Can We Help?
