Earning an education is the way to a better life and helps handle the hardest of situations outside of school. Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Nursery and Primary School in Oyede, Nigeria, is a safe haven for the children who live in this small rural community. More than 250 children attend the school, while their parents work hard on the farms to make ends meet.
Currently, the school operates within a dilapidated and worn-down church building. You have the incredible opportunity to transform the church structure into a safe and functional education facility. The Catholic primary school encourages students to pursue their own passions, strengthen their faith, and deal with painful realities that exists outside of the classroom.
Seven-year-old Agnes is a dedicated student who is working hard to set herself up for success. When Agnes was barely three years old, her parents went through a painful separation. Agnes’ mother was forced to relocate to Oyede, so she could fall back on the support of her immediate family. She brought Agnes along with her while leaving behind her two older children with their father, ultimately separating the siblings from each other. Agnes currently lives with her mother, aunties, and uncles.
Despite being exposed to hardship at a young age, Agnes eagerly loves attending school at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Nursery and Primary School. Every morning she jumps out of bed very early to walk with her aunt, a teacher at the school, and attend morning Mass before class. Through her hard work, she has won the ‘Smartest Pupil of the Week’ award a couple of times since attending the school. Her favorite subject is English, and she enjoys acting and taking part in drama shows with her classmates. When asked what she would like to do when she grows up, she proudly declares: “I want to be a doctor someday!”.
